“Daddy?”
 
I sniffle, trying to keep myself together.
 
My fingers grasp my tattered clothes in a vain attempt to cover my abused body.
 
His voice is frantic. “Baby, what happened?”
 
I whisper, “Please, Daddy…I want to go home, please…”
 
My shoulders are shaking with barely stifled sobs.
 
I hurt. Everywhere. I’m battered, bruised – broken.
 
“Bella! Where are you? Tell me!”
 
He’s more adamant this time, but I can’t answer.
 
“I don’t know…” I whimper.
 
I hear him muttering to someone. Then, “Bella, what do you see?”
 
I describe the open road, the phone booth in the middle of nowhere.

My fingers move idly over the weathered ebony and ivory keys.
 
Out of tune…just like my life…
 
I shake my head as I continue playing.   
 
This battered, old piano is all that I have left. 
 
The only thing I was able to salvage from the wreckage that was my home.  
 
The storm took everything else – including my mother, wife, and daughter.
 
I feel a hand on my shoulder; I look up as it squeezes lightly. Emmett’s eyes are shimmering. “Come on, Edward. Dad’s waiting.”
 
I nod, lowering the cover onto the keys.
 
With one last glance, I say farewell.

A ripping sound, followed shortly by cursing, reaches my ears, and I look up.
 
“No, no, no! Why? Why must you hate on me today, Murphy?”
 
I can’t help but chuckle at her words as she scurries, trying to catch the papers flying everywhere.
 
Rushing to her aid, I begin to pick up the scattered mess.
 
Some of them have landed in a puddle. I carefully lift them, holding them out to her apologetically.
 
“Here you are.”
 
She sighs, giving me a small smile. “Thanks.”
 
Her eyes question me.
 
“I’m Jasper, by the way.”
 
“Alice.”
 
I take her offered hand.

She gasps, looking around.
 
Her eyes fixed on the chandelier above, she whispers, “I can’t believe you grew up here.”
 
She leans into me. I kiss the top of her head.
 
Turning her around, I wrap my arms around her – my hands resting on her belly.
 
“This house’s been in my family for generations. I guess it’s easy to forget, sometimes.”
 
She tilts her head. I lean in, kissing her tenderly.
 
I murmur, “I guess it’s my turn to raise a family here now…”  
 
She reaches up, her fingers playing with my hair.
 
“We’ll take good care of it, baby.”

Every day.

The same people, doing the same jobs they loathe, talking in the same irritable manner.

I hate working in this office jungle, but it pays the bills.

My one bright spot is seeing him.

The new guy.

Geeky, glasses, fuckhot body – and best of all? He doesn’t know it.

In short, he’s my kryptonite.

Every day, I try to gather courage to talk to him, and fail.

Today’s no different. I sigh as I walk past his cubby.

“Bella?”

I turn, heart beating frantically in my chest. “Yes, Edward?”

He smiles shyly. “Would you have dinner with me?”

“I feel us drowning, in a sea spilled from a cup…”

My throat constricts painfully as I try to stop the tears from falling.
 
“Calling all angels…”
 
The song on the radio seems strangely apt.
 
“Why?” I croak, my lip trembling.
 
His gaze is hard, his jaw set. “I can’t do this anymore, Bella.”
 
I crack.
 
“Do what anymore, Edward?”
 
Running his fingers through his hair, he looks away. “I can’t pretend to be what I’m not. I’m not good for you – we both know it.”
 
I scowl. “No, I don’t know that, Edward. I don’t know that at all!”

“Better hold on tight, Spidermonkey!”

I grin as she grabs hold of me so tight that – were I human – she would choke me. Her legs are wrapped around my waist. I relish in the feel of her body so close to mine.
 
As we climb higher, she squeals, laughing – music to my ears.
 
Her heart beats frantically when I jump, easily leaping from tree to tree.
 
Finally, at the top of a fir tree, we stop. I pull her to me – back to chest – my arms holding her safe.
 
Awestruck, she whispers, “So beautiful.” 
 
“Indeed,” I murmur with a smile.

I relish the feel of her skin against mine as we kiss languidly.
 
It has been too long since I was home last, but she welcomes me into her arms as if I never left.

She cooked dinner – all my favorites – and we’re fed, tipsy, and decidedly horny. “I love you, Jazz,” she whispers.
 
“More than life, my Bella,” is my reply.
 
She shifts, lying on top of me. I tighten my hold on her, my lips making their way from hers, down her neck.
 
She sighs contentedly, her hands tangling in my hair.
 
“Make me yours again…” she breathes.
